Castello di Spessa: Crafting Your Sustainable Luxury Wedding in Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Today, I’m taking you on a journey to a place that truly captures the heart of what Love Grows Hope is all about: the enchanting Castello di Spessa in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This isn’t just a stunning historic castle; it’s a vibrant estate where luxury, history, wine culture, and a deep commitment to sustainability intertwine to create unforgettable wedding experiences. I had the pleasure of speaking with the wonderful Barbara from the Pali family, owners of the castle, and I’m so excited to share what makes this place so special.

A Legacy Written in Stone and Soil

The story of Castello di Spessa is a journey through time. Its origins are ancient, with evidence of a Roman watchtower on the same hill. For over three hundred years, it was home to some of Friuli’s most powerful noble families, most notably the della Torre family, witnessing everything from medieval life to the turbulence of two World Wars. During World War I, it served as a military command for Italian marshals like Cadorna and Diaz, and in World War II, a bunker was famously built in its courtyard, now ingeniously repurposed as a unique barrique cellar for aging the estate’s finest wines.

Perhaps its most famous guest was the adventurer Giacomo Casanova, who stayed at the castle in 1773 and praised its excellent white wine. He was even joined there for a time by another great 18th-century figure, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart’s future librettist. This rich, layered history is something the current ownership deeply respects and works to preserve, allowing couples to truly immerse themselves in the story of the place.

A World Away, Yet Perfectly Placed

Castello di Spessa is nestled in a part of FVG that Barbara describes as “off the most popular routes, but well-positioned”. It’s a region of incredible natural beauty where vines have always been cultivated, shaping a well-designed, clean landscape with a distinct “wow effect”. Their “maniacal care for the greenery,” with everything done in-house by their dedicated gardeners, adds a visible layer of personal touch.

But it’s more than just a romantic castle. It’s a complete resort promoting “Slow Tourism,” offering accommodation, hospitality, golf, and a wealth of activities. “We offer maps for hiking trails and e-bikes with routes we’ve specially designed”, Barbara explained, “guests can explore nearby art cities like Aquileia and Cividale del Friuli, then return to the Castello for unique spa treatments using products born from the estate itself – from vinotherapy creams to honey-based lotions. It’s an ideal place for an active holiday filled with relaxation and exceptional food and wine, attracting guests from the Netherlands, Austria, Germany, Mexico and the US”.

Sustainability: A Daily Practice, Deeply Rooted

For Castello di Spessa, sustainability isn’t a trend; it’s woven into their daily operations. “For us, it means utilizing all possible methods to make this world greener,” Barbara stated. This philosophy is evident everywhere:

  • Energy & Resources: Photovoltaic panels are installed on estate buildings, and they practice wastewater recovery for irrigation.
  • Vineyard & Nature: Their vineyards are managed with integrated pest management (lotta integrata) and according to SQNPI standards. Their “Api in vigna” (Bees in the vineyard) project supports bee repopulation, and they actively protect local wildlife.
  • Hyper-Local Cuisine: “All our food suppliers are from the region”, Barbara proudly shared. From Grado fish to local prosciutto and cheeses, their menus are a celebration of the territory. They even produce their own bread and pasta and grow all their own spices. Moreover, they are careful to reduce waste as much as possible by using all parts of the ingredients and recycling diligently.

A Symphony of Sustainable Luxury: The Scent of Spessa

One of the most captivating aspects is how the Castello transforms its own resources into unique luxury products, perfect for guests and even wedding favors (bomboniere):

  • “Fior di Spessa” Perfume: A unique fragrance created by a renowned Friulian master perfumer, capturing the essence of the Castello’s park, vineyards, and historic cellars.
  • Vinum Spa Products: This signature scent is the leitmotif for their spa creams which is made using their wine, must, grape seeds, and vine ferments from their estate. Guests can experience unique treatments like Wine Therapy, Honey Therapy (using honey from their own apiary), and Grappa Therapy.
  • Unique Wedding Favors: Couples can choose to gift their guests jars of the Castello’s honey, a bottle of their wine or grappa, or even special soaps made by a local artisan using the Castello’s own olive oil.

Weddings at the Castle: Immersive & Meaningful

Barbara advises couples to “utilize the external parts of the castle as much as possible,” highlighting the “marvelous views of nature, the 18th-century castle itself, the Italian garden, and the park overlooking the vineyards.”

The “Slow Wedding” concept thrives here, with many couples and their guests staying for several days, enjoying the golf course woven through the vineyards, indulgent spa experiences, and exploring the region. It becomes a true ‘wedcation.’
