Beyond the Buzzword: What Does a “Sustainable Wedding” Truly Mean?

How often have you seen labels like “Sustainable,” “Green,” “Eco-friendly,” or “Kind to the Planet”? The word “Sustainable” is everywhere these days, so much so that it risks becoming an empty buzzword – trendy, perhaps, but often feeling too overwhelming to truly understand or put into practice, especially when planning something as significant as a wedding.

But a genuine sustainable approach isn’t just a trend; in today’s world, it feels more necessary than ever. Let me explain why, and how it applies beautifully to weddings.

What Does “Sustainability” Truly Mean?

The word comes from the Latin sustinere, meaning “to hold up”, which implies maintaining, supporting, or enduring. While there isn’t one single definition locked in stone, the first Earth Summit in Rio (1992) provided a helpful framework by highlighting three key, interconnected pillars:

  1. Environmental Sustainability: The ability of the environment to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity, and resources for present and future generations.
  2. Social Sustainability: The ability of society (or a community) to function equitably, ensuring well-being, harmony, human rights, and meeting diverse needs.
  3. Economic Sustainability: The ability of an economy to support a defined level of production and prosperity indefinitely, operating ethically and responsibly.

This immediately shows us how sustainability is much more than just “green”.

Truly sustainable practices aim to be responsible across multiple levels, ensuring both the planet and its people can thrive together. This mindset can, and arguably should, apply to all aspects of our lives – including our celebrations!

Applying Sustainability to Weddings: Controversy and Opportunity

When we talk about sustainability and weddings, a common question arises: can an event that naturally uses resources, involves travel, and produces waste ever be 100% sustainable, especially from a purely environmental standpoint?

While the “least impact” might technically mean no event at all, perhaps that’s not the most empowering way to frame it for a celebration as meaningful as your wedding.

Instead, it’s more constructive to think in relative terms. The real opportunity, and our focus at Love Grows Hope, is on how we can consciously:

  1. Minimize the negative impacts typically associated with weddings (like waste, high emissions, or resource depletion).
  2. Simultaneously, maximize the positive contributions your celebration can make.

This shift in perspective truly opens up a world of possibilities! It means a lot can absolutely be done to make your big day more respectful of the environment, more beneficial to local communities (especially in our beloved Friuli-Venezia Giulia!), and supportive of ethical businesses.

It might be hard to achieve a perfect “zero impact” label for a large event (although there are inspiring possibilities I’ll talk about in later posts!), but many concrete actions can significantly reduce unwanted footprints while amplifying the good. And trust me, making these intentional choices is precisely what makes your celebration feel even more magical, authentic, and deeply meaningful.

Furthermore, there’s an often-undervalued aspect: your wedding is a powerful platform. It’s a chance to share your values with your most cherished people. When sustainable and ethical choices are woven thoughtfully into the day, your guests take home more than just lovely memories – they take home a sense of purpose and meaning that truly reflects you.

A wedding favor card made of recycled paper rests on a rustic wooden table next to a sprig of lavender. The card announces a donation to Grow My Tree and is signed "Hellen & Katie" in calligraphy, with a small heart emblem at the bottom.

Concrete Ideas for a (More) Sustainable Wedding

Here are just three initial ideas for concrete actions you can take:

  1. Mindful Menus: Choose a caterer or restaurant committed to seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. This drastically reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food long distances and directly benefits local farmers and producers.
    • Going Further: Consider creative vegetarian or vegan menus. This significantly lessens the environmental impact associated with the meat industry. I chose a vegetarian menu for my own wedding, and our caterer created such inventive, delicious dishes that honestly, nobody missed the meat!
  2. Conscious Choices with Flowers: Flowers can be tricky. Even seasonal, local blooms require resources like water, and cut flowers have a short lifespan. However, mindful options exist:
    • Ask your florist about their sustainable practices (e.g., avoiding floral foam, composting waste).
    • Prioritize seasonal and locally grown varieties.
    • Consider potted plants, especially herbs like rosemary or basil (like I used!), which guests might even take home.
    • Explore beautiful alternatives like high-quality paper flowers, dried flowers, or non-floral decor (lanterns, books, fruits).
  3. Favors with Purpose: Wedding favors are traditional in Italy, but often end up unused or discarded. Instead of contributing to waste, why not make favors a chance to share your values?
    • Donate on Behalf of Guests: Make a donation to a project or NGO you love.
    • Partner Up: Work with your chosen charity (like Still I Rise, who provided wonderful notebooks for our wedding) to create a meaningful card or small token explaining their mission and why supporting them matters to you. It raises awareness and can even inspire new donors among your guests!

Of course, this is just scratching the surface. There are countless other actions, from choosing recycled gold for wedding rings and opting for vintage or ethically made dresses, to planning “slow wedcations” that minimize travel impact. We’ll dive deeper into many of these in future articles!

Final Thoughts: Beware of Greenwashing!

One crucial piece of advice: be discerning. Just because a venue, planner, or caterer labels themselves “sustainable,” “eco-friendly,” or “zero waste,” doesn’t automatically make it true. Always ask questions and look for evidence:

  • What concrete steps do they take to reduce waste, energy consumption, or carbon footprint?
  • Do they actively support local artisans and producers?
  • Do they prioritize inclusive business practices and fair labor?
  • Do they contribute to the local community’s economy?

This mindset shifts the focus towards making minimal negative impact and, even more importantly, maximizing the positive impact through ethical sourcing, supporting local Friulian communities, and backing causes you believe in.

Finding suppliers genuinely committed to these practices can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack, especially when planning from abroad – and that’s exactly why I started Love Grows Hope!

My goal is to help you navigate this intricate research. Soon, I’ll be sharing recommendations for trusted, responsible suppliers in my home region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

As usual, get in touch to share your thoughts!
